International Grooms and mental health
Most grooms start out in this career path for the love of the horse. However, grooms can often face a number of challenges in their career which can contribute to struggles with mental wellness.
If you are struggling, it is important to know that you are not alone.
The IGA is collaborating with the UK-based mental health charity, Riders Minds to ensure all grooms know where they can get immediate free support.
Founded to provide all equestrians with free access to counselling and mental health support, Riders Minds provides a live web chat service which is available 24/7 worldwide, and has translation available.
For those based in the UK there is also a free phone and text line.

You will find the web chat facility by clicking the purple button at the bottom of your screen.
Riders Minds lines are staffed by people who understand the horse industry, and the unique challenges you face in your career as a groom.
There are many reasons why you might encounter challenges to your mental health whilst working as a groom.
From poor employment situations to facing grief and loss, the life of a groom can bring difficult times.
If you are struggling, whatever is affecting you, your feelings and thoughts are valid. Do not suffer alone – please do reach out, speak up, and use the resources available to you for support when you need them.
IGA members can find more help and advice about managing your mind in the International Grooms Minds section of the website.
